* Olive wood
Olive wood is used in knife making to produce exclusive handles. It has a gray-primed coloration with beautiful color nuances and a strong, individual grain. Olive wood is very hard and dense and has high resistance to moisture.
The wood of the olive tree
Whether in Southern Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa: the olive tree is not only cultivated around the Mediterranean but also symbolizes the landscape and culture of this region like no other plant. It grows only under very specific climatic conditions, especially those found in the Mediterranean area - it needs little water and tolerates heat but no frost. The olive tree has been cultivated as a useful plant since the fourth millennium BC and today is represented by more than 1000 different varieties in the Mediterranean region alone. Additionally, olive trees are found by the Black Sea, in the non-Mediterranean regions of the Middle East, and in southern Africa. Depending on the variety, olive trees reach heights between ten and twenty meters. They grow very slowly but can live for several hundred years. Their gnarled growth is characteristic.
The hardest wood in Europe
The slow growth on predominantly poor, dry soils and the peculiarly irregular growth of the olive tree give its wood very special qualities: On the one hand, the slow growth causes olive wood to become very dense and hard - harder than any other native European wood species. On the other hand, the gnarled growth provides a characteristic grain that varies greatly from tree to tree. The sapwood of the olive tree is pale yellow, the heartwood is grayish and mostly interspersed with dark brown streaks.
Precious due to slow growth
Olive wood is precious not only because of the extremely slow growth of the olive tree but also because it must dry for several years before it can be processed. In its processed state, it has a very smooth, slightly glossy surface that can be maintained by regular rubbing with olive oil. Besides being used for making high-quality knife handles, olive wood is also mainly used in furniture making.
