Sure - you can also lather your shaving soap in other containers. But it works better in a soap bowl that is large enough to prevent the foam from overflowing and gives the brush head enough freedom of movement. 

This very large shaving soap bowl is ideally suited for brush heads with a ring diameter of 24mm or more. 

The lid prevents the shaving soap from drying out too quickly - which speeds up lathering the next day and of course prevents dust deposits (if you want to grow a three-day beard). 

Since the bowl is made of stainless steel, nothing can rust or tarnish - an advantage over chromed or nickel-plated bowls made of non-stainless metals. 

The small button to lift the lid is made of solid brass (chromed) - and not pressed sheet metal, as with some other metal bowls.
